Reference Management
Using EndNote
This guide is geared toward the use of EndNote reference management software, which is recommended for the DNP program. However, some of the instructions are applicable to other applications.
Getting Started
Follow these steps to begin using EndNote.
When you open EndNote, you will initially see a blank screen:
Start by navigating to the menu at the top of the screen and selecting File ⇒ New ….
This should open a dialog box from which you can create a library to store your citations. Give the library a meaningful name based on your program, class, or project.
A new window will appear displaying your library. Now that your library is set up, you can begin importing citations and articles.
Importing Citations from EBSCOhost
The EBSCO databases allow you to download a citation in an RIS file.
When looking at the text or full text of an article, select the icon labeled Export in the right sidebar. If there is no text in the sidebar, the icon will resemble a piece of paper with an arrow pointed right.
This will open the Export Manager. From the options, choose to download the file as a Direct Export in RIS Format.
Save the file to your computer.
With EndNote installed, you should be able to double-click the file to open it.
If the file does not open in EndNote when you double-click, right-click the file instead and select Open with. From the available options, select EndNote and also select Always use this app to open .ris files to permanently associate EndNote with this file type.
In you EndNote library, click the folder-shaped icon in the upper left corner. This should display the new citation.
If the article is available in a full-text PDF document, you can download it and associate it with the citation.
Once you have downloaded the document, select the paperclip icon in EndNote and choose the downloaded file.
