The Publications Warehouse provides an index to official, USGS-authored publications of the U.S. Geological Survey. This includes USGS-authored journal articles, series reports, book chapters, other government publications, and conference proceedings. Descriptions of USGS series can be found here.

Are there non-USGS publications in the Publications Warehouse?

Yes. The Publications Warehouse includes citations for USGS-authored journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, reports, and other information products published by third parties in addition to USGS-published reports. USGS makes its own published materials available free of charge, but access to non-USGS published documents outside the USGS website may require a subscription or purchase. Check with your organization or the vendor for more details.

Are there links to non-governmental websites included in Publications Warehouse citations?

Generally, citations for publications published by the USGS include links to .gov websites. However, citations for publications authored by USGS authors but published by third parties often link to the publisher’s website, not a .gov site. Users may click on these links at their own discretion. The USGS does not guarantee the security of any links outside its website.

Are there outdated publications in the Publications Warehouse?

Publications Warehouse tries to represent the complete collection of old and new publications authored by USGS authors. All publications with USGS affiliation, regardless of age, should have a citation in the Publications Warehouse. Many older publications have been superseded, and when superseding information is available, it is added and linked on the old publication’s citation page to direct users to the more updated version.

Does Publications Warehouse have citations for every publication authored by the USGS?

The goal of the Publications Warehouse is to have citations for all publications authored by USGS authors during the entire history of the U.S. Geological Survey. USGS Numbered Series reports all have citations in the Publications Warehouse. However, many older journal articles, conference proceedings, books, and reports published outside an official series or by third parties are still being added to Publications Warehouse. If you have information about a USGS publication that does not have a citation page in Publications Warehouse, please contact us.

Does Publications Warehouse have full-text links for every publication citation?

The Publications Warehouse includes links to access publications when available. However, not all publications are available online. The USGS Library continues to digitize older print-only publications published by the USGS and makes them available online as they are digitized.

It contains content from journals published by the American Psychological Association (APA), its imprint the Educational Publishing Foundation (EPF), and from allied organizations including the Canadian Psychological Association and the Hogrefe Publishing Group. It includes all journal articles, book reviews, letters to the editor, and errata from each journal. Coverage spans 1894 to the present; nearly all APA journals go back to Volume 1, Issue 1. CINAHL® with Full Text is one of the world’s most comprehensive sources of full text for nursing & allied health journals, providing full text for more than 603 journals indexed in CINAHL. Of those, 305 are not found with full text in any version of Academic Search™, Health Source®, or Nursing & Allied Health Collection™. This authoritative file contains full text for many of the most used journals in the CINAHL index—with no embargo. With full-text coverage dating back to 1981, CINAHL® with Full Text is the definitive research tool for all areas of nursing and allied health literature.

This database also provides indexing for more than 3,000 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. The database contains more than 2.9 million records dating back to 1981. Offering complete coverage of English-language nursing journals and publications from the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses’ Association, CINAHL® with Full Text covers nursing, biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, alternative / complementary medicine, consumer health, and 17 allied health disciplines. In addition, this database offers access to healthcare books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals, and book chapters. Searchable cited references for more than 1,300 journals are also included.

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews contains full-text articles, as well as protocols focusing on the effects of healthcare. The reviews are highly structured and systematic, with evidence included or excluded on the basis of explicit quality criteria, to minimize bias. Data is evidence-based medicine and is often combined statistically (with meta-analysis) to increase the power of the findings of numerous studies, each too small to produce reliable results individually. Now included in the 4,800-plus records are 22 reviews which formerly made up the Cochrane Database of Methodology Reviews. This database is updated quarterly.

Environment Complete offers deep coverage in applicable areas of agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy, renewable energy sources, natural resources, marine & freshwater science, geography, pollution & waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning, and more. Environment Complete contains more than 1,957,000 records from more than 1,700 domestic and international titles going back to the 1940s (including 1,125 active core titles) as well as more than 120 monographs. GreenFILE offers well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. MEDLINE provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre–clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing with tree, tree hierarchy, subheadings, and explosion capabilities to search citations from over 5,600 current biomedical journals.

Bookshelf is an online searchable collection of more than 9,000 books, reports, databases, and other scholarly literature in biology, medicine, and the life sciences developed and managed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health.

As the books division of the NLM Literature Archive (NLM LitArch), the digital repository of full-text literature, Bookshelf serves not only to preserve and maintain free access to electronic biomedical literature, but through its integration with other NCBI resources such as PubMed, Gene, OMIM, and PubChem, it fosters both intentional and serendipitous discoveries.

Each publication on Bookshelf is divided into searchable units of content based on the organization of parts, chapters, sections, subsections, etc., within the individual publication. The entry point for a user is a page within the book, usually found by a search.

Once browsing this book page, it is possible to navigate around a whole unit of content. The size of the unit of content and its interconnection with other parts of the book will depend on both the organization of the book and the wishes of the publisher.

PubMed is a free resource supporting the search and retrieval of biomedical and life sciences literature with the aim of improving health—both globally and personally.

The PubMed database contains more than 36 million citations and abstracts of biomedical literature. It does not include full-text journal articles; however, links to the full text are often present when available from other sources, such as the publisher’s website or PubMed Central (PMC).

Available to the public online since 1996, PubMed was developed and is maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Citations for PubMed Central (PMC) articles make up the second largest component of PubMed.

PMC is a full-text archive that includes articles from journals reviewed and selected by NLM for archiving (current and historical), as well as individual articles collected for archiving in compliance with funder policies.

Bookshelf

The final component of PubMed is citations for books and some individual chapters available on Bookshelf.

PubMed Central® (PMC) is a free full-text archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine (NIH / NLM). In keeping with NLM’s legislative mandate to collect and preserve the biomedical literature, PMC is part of the NLM collection, which also includes NLM’s extensive print and licensed electronic journal holdings and supports contemporary biomedical and health care research and practice as well as future scholarship.

Available to the public online since 2000, PMC was developed and is maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at NLM.

About the Content

Since its inception in 2000, PMC has grown from comprising only two journals, PNAS: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Molecular Biology of the Cell, to an archive of articles from thousands of journals. In addition, PMC also contains author manuscripts deposited through the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS), and preprints collected through the NIH Preprint Pilot.

The PMC archive contains more than 8 million full-text article records spanning several centuries of biomedical and life science research (late 1700s to present). This content includes articles that have been formally published in a scholarly journal, author manuscripts that have been peer-reviewed and accepted for publication in a journal, and preprint versions of articles that have been made public prior to peer review.

Content is deposited in the PMC archive through collaborations with publishers, societies, research funders, and international organizations. Our Collections page provides an overview of the collections that result from these content collaborations.

Cochrane Controlled Trials Register is a bibliography of controlled trials identified by contributors to the Cochrane Collaboration and others, as part of an international effort to hand-search the world’s journals and create an unbiased source of data for systematic reviews. Cochrane Controlled Trials Register includes reports published in conference proceedings and in many other sources not currently listed in MEDLINE or other bibliographic databases.

The Cochrane Methodology Register is a bibliography of publications which report on methods used in the conduct of controlled trials. It includes journal articles, books, and conference proceedings; these articles are taken from the MEDLINE database and from hand searches. The database contains studies of methods used in reviews and more general methodological studies, which could be relevant to anyone preparing systematic reviews. CMR records contain the title of the article, information on where it was published (bibliographic details), and in some cases, a summary of the article. CMR is produced by the UK Cochrane Centre, on behalf of the Cochrane Methodology Review Group.

Data.gov is the federal government’s open data site and aims to make government more open and accountable. Opening government data increases citizen participation in government, creates opportunities for economic development, and informs decision-making in both the private and public sectors.

Data.gov implements The OPEN Government Data Act (Title Ⅱ of the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act of 2018, Public Law 115-435). The OPEN Government Data Act makes Data.gov a requirement in statute, rather than a policy. It requires federal agencies to publish their information online as open data, using standardized, machine-readable data formats, with their metadata included in the Data.gov catalog.

Data.gov is working with an expanded group of federal agencies to include their datasets in Data.gov as they implement the law. In addition, the law requires that GSA work with the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Government Information Services to establish an online repository of tools, best practices, and schema standards to facilitate the adoption of open data practices across the Federal Government. That repository can be found at resources.data.gov.

Data.gov was built with open-source software. Anyone, especially local, state, and foreign governments, is welcome to borrow the code behind Data.gov.

Data.ok.gov is a service designed to provide Oklahomans with deep access to data and statistics about the activities of Oklahoma’s government. It’s a simple way to explore data about the economy, public health, transportation, the environment, and more, all on one website.

By posting state government data in raw, machine-readable formats, it [sic] can be reformatted, repurposed, and reused in different ways, allowing the community at large to build custom applications in order to analyze and display the information. The centralized, open-format nature of the database allows anyone to create mashups and visualizations, build applications, conduct analyses, and perform research.

History

Checkbook.ok.gov was created as a part of H.B. 1086—the Transparency, Accountability and Innovation in Oklahoma State Government 2.0 Act of 2011. The bill was signed into law May 20, 2011, with the goal of providing Oklahomans with unprecedented access to government.

What kinds of data are available?

Numerous agencies and entities contribute to checkbook.ok.gov. Some examples of available data include:

• Payroll information for state employees

• State expenditures on outside vendors
• High school and university graduation rates
• Rates of health problems, such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes
• Lists and maps of state parks
• Air and water quality assessments

The primary aim of DOAB is to increase discoverability of open-access books. Academic publishers are invited to provide metadata of their open-access books to DOAB. DOAB is an open infrastructure committed to open science. It runs on the open-source DSpace 6 platform. Metadata will be harvestable in order to maximize dissemination, visibility, and impact. Aggregators can integrate the records in their commercial services and libraries can integrate the directory into their online catalogues, helping scholars and students to discover the books. The directory is open to all publishers who publish academic, peer-reviewed books in open access and should contain as many books as possible, provided that these publications are in open access and meet academic standards.
